The history of our local navigation began in 1856 when a light featuring a sixth-order Fresnel lens was established on the north pier. Following a destructive storm in 1860, a temporary pole light served the channel until a permanent replacement was constructed in 1867. As the pier expanded over the following decades, the lighthouse was regularly repositioned to the new terminus. Tragedy struck again in 1891 when a schooner collision sent the structure into the lake, necessitating another temporary pole beacon. Stability returned in 1900 with a new southeast pier light forming a range arrangement, followed by the 1906 completion of the north pierhead light to replace the "Old Kenosha Light." Technical advancements continued with a 1913 upgrade, a transition to a red signal in 1917, and full electrification alongside the addition of a foghorn in 1925. This enduring sentinel remained active until 2008, when the Coast Guard officially designated the light as excess property.
